London Trips & Tours

With a borough for every possible mood and sightseeing for days, London has genuinely never been better.

As any Londoner will tell you, England’s iconic, vibrant, melting pot of a capital city is near impossible to sum up in an essay, let alone only a few words. But if we had to give it a go, we’d start with the facts: there are 32 boroughs, eight million people, two thousand years of recorded history, more exceptional restaurants than you can shake a stick at, and 241 theatres. So far, so enormous – but the trick is to resist the urge to cover it all and instead choose some highlights and do them well. We’re talking a morning at the Tate Modern, with St Paul's directly across the Thames, Borough Market in the afternoon, where food has been traded for over a thousand years, and an evening in the West End. Or, perhaps Shoreditch for under-the-radar galleries and late nights, Bermondsey for the most exciting new restaurants, Notting Hill for Portobello Market, and Soho for absolutely everything else.

Things to do

What to do in London

There's a version of London for whichever mood strikes you, and most visitors end up doing all of them in a single week. Watch the scarlet-coated guardsmen at Buckingham Palace, then queue politely for the crown jewels at the Tower of London; do it in a chauffeured black cab if walking feels like hard work. History buffs will want Westminster Abbey and a climb to St Paul's Whispering Gallery, while the more energetic among you can explore the Square Mile before hunting street art through Shoreditch. Greenwich rewards a slower afternoon: the Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory's meridian line (one foot in each hemisphere, camera ready), and a cruise back up the Thames with a glass of something cold. Follow 007 through Mayfair, the Beatles across Abbey Road, or simply settle into Borough Market and a proper afternoon tea. London never really switches off.

Why you'll love it

The museums. The British Museum, the V&A, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery and the Tate Modern are all entirely free to enter and collectively among the finest in the world.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Of course the big hitters aren’t to be missed, but get out of Central London and you’ll find some real gems: West Hampstead for aeons old shops and traders, Barnsbury for cute pubs and Peckham for food stalls and personality.

Something to think about

Book theatre before you arrive. The best West End productions sell out weeks ahead (and perhaps make your restaurant reservations even earlier!)
