About Hotel Le Pigonnet

Cézanne set up his easel in this garden and the view he painted hasn't changed since.

Behind gates on the southern edge of Aix, this old bastide is wrapped in a garden of rose arcades, chestnut shade, fountains and chess tables, with a heated pool tucked under the branches. Cézanne came here to paint Mont Sainte-Victoire, and from the right spot you can still see what caught his eye. Serge Gainsbourg and Clint Eastwood have both signed the guest book, and the spa offers singing lessons alongside the massages (yes, really!). Central Aix, with its fountains, plane trees and unhurried lunches, is only a stroll away. The garden makes a strong case for staying put.

Property details

The property

The grounds do the talking: chestnuts planted long before anyone thought to build a ring road, arched walkways smothered in roses, little fountains, and enough shade to survive a Provençal August. The pool sits in the garden rather than bolted onto a sun deck, which makes all the difference. La Table du Pigonnet serves under the branches when the weather behaves and inside when it doesn't, while the Rose Bar keeps hot chocolate on standby each afternoon. The spa hides a hammam and sauna behind its green shutters.

The rooms

Categories climb from compact singles, fine for a night but no more, past classic doubles facing the courtyard, to garden-view rooms where you wake among the roses. Junior suites bring balconies angled at Sainte-Victoire, and three suites, reworked by designer Thibault Picard, each open onto private gardens of their own. The two villas, named for the years they went up two centuries apart, take a family reunion in their stride. Throughout, you'll find antique furniture, original artwork and pale-blue panelling.

Activities

Stroll into town for the Cours Mirabeau's fountains and its double row of plane trees, then follow the bronze pavement markers that trace Cézanne's Aix all the way up to the Atelier de Cézanne, his studio, preserved almost as he left it. Markets fill the squares most mornings. Back at the hotel, pétanque and chess wait under the chestnuts and the pool does the rest. Book the spa's art therapy if singing feels a step too far. Sainte-Victoire itself is a short drive for anyone chasing the painter's view.

Why we love it

Why we love it

That garden. Roses climbing the arches, chestnut shade, fountains burbling away, and somewhere in it the precise angle on Sainte-Victoire that had Cézanne reaching for his brushes.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Thursday evenings are the ones we'd aim for: live music among the roses, cocktails mixed at the Rose Bar and the hotel at its most sociable. Otherwise turn up around teatime for the daily chocolate ritual…

Something to think about

It's a fifteen-minute walk into central Aix, though the shuttle takes the sting out.
