An aromatic wonderland where lavender whispers sweet nothings to the olive groves, and the light seems to dance with an artist's touch.

In Provence, the sun has a standing reservation and the art of living well is practically a competitive sport. This slice of southern France is a sensory overload in the best possible way – a place where the light is so magical it bewitched the likes of Van Gogh and Cézanne, and the air is perfumed with lavender, thyme, and freshly baked baguettes. From the craggy peaks of the Alpilles to the flamingo-dotted wetlands of the Camargue, Provence is a land of startling contrasts. Roman ruins rub shoulders with mediaeval villages perched precariously on hilltops, while markets burst with a kaleidoscope of local produce. And let's not forget the coastline, where the Mediterranean sparkles like a spilled bottle of Pastis, inviting you to dive in and leave your worries on the sun-baked shore.

Things to do

What to do in Provence

Provence rewards the unhurried. Spend a morning in the hilltop villages of the Luberon: Gordes, Ménerbes and the half-ruined Oppède-le-Vieux, with Sénanque Abbey sitting in its valley below. Then swap stone for sea on a boat trip from Cassis through the Calanques, where white limestone cliffs drop into water the colour of bottle glass. Wine lovers can taste their way round Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas (your driver-guide takes the wheel) or sip rosé at a family domaine, and keen cooks can find out what a fistful of Provençal herbs does to a summer tomato. For culture, you have Van Gogh's Arles, the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard, the papal palace in Avignon and Marseille's old Le Panier quarter. The Camargue adds white horses, black bulls and flamingos in shrimp-pink. If it's the lavender of Valensole you're after, plan carefully: the fields are purple from roughly late June to mid-July, and after that they're just stubble. For something rarer, we'd book a private visit to a family chandelier workshop or a day canyoning in the Gorges du Verdon. Bring an appetite. And comfortable shoes.

Why you'll love it

Why you'll love it

Provence is the kind of place where your cares seem to just float away on a lavender-scented breeze. Follow in the footsteps of artists in Arles, where Van Gogh found inspiration (and infamy), hike the ochre Martian cliffs of Roussillon, or time your visit for the lavender bloom, when the Valensole Plateau transforms into a purple sea.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

For a truly unique experience, visit the Carrières de Lumières near Les Baux-de-Provence. This former quarry has been transformed into a mind-bending sound and light show, projecting masterpieces onto massive rock walls. Afterward, cool off with a visit to the Fontaine de Vaucluse, a mysterious spring that's the stuff of local legends and geological head-scratchers.

Something to think about

Something to think about

While Provence in summer is a postcard come to life, it's also when the region is at its busiest (and hottest). Consider visiting in the shoulder seasons when the crowds thin out but the magic remains. Spring brings wildflowers and the first blush of rosé season, while autumn offers truffle hunts and grape harvests.
