About Hotel Montalembert

Paris's original boutique hotel, where the city's publishing best still lunch out.

Rue de Montalembert is a hundred metres long, with the Gallimard publishing house at one end and a square named after Gabriel García Márquez at the other. The Montalembert has occupied number 3 since 1926, and when Christian Liaigre stripped it back in the 90s, people started calling it a "boutique hotel" - and it truly lives up to the phrase. Classic yet modern, lavish but never over the top, it boasts a restaurant that Left Bank publishers treat as their canteen and a private library, Salon Gallimard, that's the perfect spot for a nightcap. Fascinatingly, it also claims to be the first hotel in Paris to put duvets on its beds (and we can confirm, they are still there now)!

Property details

The property

Géraldine Prieur's graphic carpets set the tone in the lobby, alongside forest greens, full-grain leather and spectacular sculptural light fittings. Cyril Russo helms the The Montalembert Restaurant, a room of velvet banquettes and rosewood panelling and a menu of re-worked French classics. And in the bar next door, the Le Centenaire cocktail, Hendrick's steeped in violet, lemon, champagne, is the one to order. In the basement, there's a gym, sauna and spa with a compact list of treatments in partnership with French brand, Calma.

The rooms

Decked out in beautiful saffron, mango and gold tones with Pierre Frey silk at the windows, every room carries a custom ebony folding-screen headboard, drawn from Art Deco originals by Pascal Allaman. The bathrooms are all raw teak ceilings, white-veined Carrara and mosaic in grey, taupe and gold. Deluxe Balcony rooms have a small private balcony; the eighth-floor Suites Montalembert have the views of rooftops. The Superiors are snug and cleverly fitted, though we'd go up a category if you've packed for a fortnight.

Activities

First up, eat your way down rue du Bac: Barthélémy for cheese, Des Gâteaux et du Pain for Claire Damon's fruit tarts and Angelina for that famous hot chocolate you could stand a spoon in. Deyrolle at number 46 has sold taxidermy and butterflies since 1831 and is deserved of twenty minutes of browsing. The Musée d'Orsay is five minutes' walk, Le Bon Marché eight, and L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon is next door. Book the centenary walking tour and discover a hundred years of hidden Saint-Germain addresses.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Book Salon Gallimard, the private room with a bay window onto the patio. It's where publishing gets done off the record, and it's yours for a dinner if you ask far enough ahead.

The lift is a vintage three-person affair, luggage not included, and the restaurant shuts for most of August. Pack light for the first and plan your dinners around the second.
