About Kivu Lodge

A blissfully tranquil Rwandan lakeside lodge
Kivu Lodge perches on a small private peninsula that juts into the quiet waters of Lake Kivu in Kibuye, Rwanda. Reached via a (currently untarred) road through banana, macadamia and coffee plantations, Kivu's location is secluded and really pristine. This is a rarely visited area, so you'll be one of the first paying guests to enjoy watching the sun set over the lake or exploring the peninsula. Come if you're craving some down time, or if you're heading from Nyungwe Forest to Volcanoes National Park. You'll be welcomed warmly, enjoy good facilities, eat well and savour stunning scenery.

Property details

The property

The main area is comfortably, if rather sparsely, furnished, with a bar whose sliding doors open to the swimming pool, and a main dining area, also with doors opening to those wonderful views. Before dinner, gather on chairs around the pool for snacks and drinks, then head indoors (or to tables outside if the weather is warm) for a really fresh, well-prepared meal. (The chocolate pancakes for dessert are superb.) The pool and its waterfall are attractively lit at night.

The rooms

The lodge offers a selection of 21 spacious cottages, of which two are executive suites. They're nestled quite close together, but once inside you get a real sense of privacy. The rooms are spacious and sparingly decorated, with large comfortable beds, plenty of soft blankets should you feel the chill, an en-suite bathroom brightly decorated with inlaid stones, and sliding doors opening to a small balcony. Electricity is currently powered by a generator. All cottages overlook the lake.

Activities

Rest and enjoy the serenity of this delightful Rwandan setting. Feeling more active? Explore the peninsula where the lodge's produce is grown, try your hand at fishing, swimming and watersports, and pay your respects to those lost during the 1990's atrocities at the Bisesero Genocide Memorial Site. Visit a local village, explore the coffee plantations surrounding Kivu Lodge, or wander into Nyungwe Forest and find the source of the River Nile for yourself...
