About Refúgio Na Serra Boutique Hotel

A garden hideaway inside a diamond-rush town famous for its marble Byzantine tombs.

Mucugê struck diamond-rich gravel in 1844 and swelled to thirty thousand people within four years; today it's a colonial town of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, home to one of Brazil's strangest cemeteries, its tombs modelled on miniature Byzantine churches. Refúgio na Serra sits in the middle of all this, behind a garden wall that somehow keeps the whole scene at arm's length. Thirteen rooms and suites, a restaurant shaded by a flamboyant tree, and a chef turning out food that has no business being this good in a town this small. Chapada Diamantina's trails start at the edge of town. This is where you rest between them.

Property details

The property

Restaurante Paraguassu, named for the river that carves through the Chapada, sits under a flamboyant tree whose canopy turns scarlet each spring and does most of the restaurant's decorating for free. Chef André's tasting menu, called Conexões, is the reason people who've never heard of Mucugê suddenly have opinions about it. Elsewhere, a walled garden runs to a firepit terrace, the Praça de Fogo, for evenings that start with caipirinhas and end later than planned, and a small spa handles the yoga and the massages.

The rooms

Thirteen rooms split across six categories, from simple garden bangalôs to the one-off Suíte Master, all thirty-five square metres of it, with a king bed, a private veranda built for parties and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that turns the mountains into wallpaper. The three Suíte Design rooms go higher and quirkier still, chalet-style ceilings above an unusually theatrical aquarium-style bathtub. Whichever you book, ask about the Suíte Jardim Suspenso; there's only one, and it hovers over the garden like a treehouse for adults.

Activities

Chapada Diamantina National Park starts more or less at Mucugê's edge, so mornings mean trailheads, not traffic: waterfalls and caves around Andaraí, the ghost-town diamond ruins at Igatu, or the longer trek into Vale do Capão if you've got the legs for it. Back in town, visit the cemetery everyone's been telling you about, then follow the hotel's tip and detour to Adamas for chocolate or Uvva for wine, proof that Bahia's sertão grows more than diamonds and sempre-viva flowers.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Soaking in the immersion tub in the Suíte Master while a wall of glass turns the Chapada's mountains into your own private cinema screen. Sunset is the matinee.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Only one jacuzzi exists here, and it must be booked (and paid for) separately, so reserve your slot at check-in, not after your first hike, or you'll likely miss out.

Something to think about

Something to think about

No swimming pool here, just a jacuzzi you book (and pay for) separately, and children under eight aren't allowed at all. Come for the mountains and the food, not for splashing about.
