About Rusacks

Wake up over the 18th green of the Old Course itself, golf's holiest turf.

St Andrews doesn't do subtle when it comes to golf, and neither does Rusacks. Built in 1887 by Johann Wilhelm Rusack, a German émigré who swapped Lower Saxony for the Fife coast, the hotel has spent well over a century propped directly above the 18th green of the Old Course, close enough to watch both triumph and heartbreak play out from your bedroom window. It's now the flagship of Marine & Lawn's collection of course-side hotels, and is adorned in golfing memorabilia and sophisticated, thoroughly Scottish details. And did we mention the R&A Clubhouse is right next door? You couldn't get closer to golf's beating heart if you tried.

Property details

The property

The lobby is all leather-bound books, tartan carpets and a fireplace flanked by golfing art. Downstairs, One Under Bar is a snug of booths and whisky bottles under a gallery of clubs and memorabilia; upstairs, the rooftop restaurant 18 opens onto a terrace with its own putting green and fire pit that looks straight over the 18th and the West Sands beyond. The Gallery, a residents-only lounge with a full-size snooker table, is usually where the evening ends up.

The rooms

120 rooms are split between the original Victorian building and a newer wing, plus there's a four-bedroom Links Townhouse for bigger groups. Ask for one of the Swilcan rooms and you'll get a glass balcony, floor-to-ceiling windows and a teal-tiled bathroom with a rain shower. Rooms in the old building have more period charm (carved headboards, brocade wallpaper, tartan carpets) but tend to be smaller, and a few are up steep, narrow staircases. The Young Tom Morris Suite has the best seat in the house: a balcony over the 1st and 18th fairways.

Activities

Golf is the obvious draw, and the concierge will sort tee times at every Links course bar the Old Course itself (that's a daily ballot, so cross your fingers). Beyond the fairways, walk West Sands at low tide, the same stretch of sand Eric Liddell sprinted across in Chariots of Fire, or wander into town for the cathedral ruins, the castle and the University's cobbled closes. Fife's coastline runs on for miles if you fancy walking off breakfast, and Kingsbarns is a short drive for whisky that hasn't gone through Room 116 first.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Room 116, a whisky lounge tucked into an old guest suite, where you can sip a 21-year-old dram on the balcony with a view straight down the 18th fairway.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Ask at One Under Bar for the haggis Scotch egg, then take it up to the 18 terrace with a whisky and watch the sun set over West Sands. It's better than any dessert menu!

Something to think about

Something to think about

There's no spa, and rooms in the original 1887 building are snug with steep stairs to match. But the new wing has larger rooms with balconies over the 18th, if you'd rather trade history for space.
