About The Chancery Rosewood

A hardy building with political roots, reborn as a dazzling, ultra-luxury Mayfair icon.

This is London's most talked-about hotel opening in years, set in its most unexpected building: the former American Embassy on Grosvenor Square, a 1960s modernist landmark given a sweeping second life by the Rosewood. The Chancery's architecture is all bold geometry and tall windows but inside, the design is clean and warm, softened with plenty of curves, spectacular chandeliers and glimmering brass. It's an all-suite hotel, and there are no less than eight restaurants and bars (including the rooftop Eagle Bar with skyline views and a Japanese sushi spot by renowned Tobi Masa) and a highly sophisticated subterranean wellness space with a glitzy pool, dermatology clinic and an ice bath. Spectacular, in every way.

Property details

The property

You could eat somewhere different every night and not exhaust the list at The Chancery Rosewood. Carbone, the New York Italian-American legend, makes its European debut here, and it's all red sauce and big showmanship; Tobi Masa serves a fantastic two-Michelin-starred omakase; and Serra does sunny Mediterranean cooking from breakfast on, with a deli and umbrella-strewn terrace for the in-between hours. Below ground, you'll find a sleek spa and pool for the morning after, while a vast ballroom rises to the occasion for any big nights.

The rooms

There are no ordinary rooms here: every one is a suite, and a generous one at that. The look is sleek, tactile and clearly expensive, with plenty of pale stone, wood and windows big enough to pull in the whole sky. Bathrooms are sculptural slabs of marble, and if you opt for one of the larger suites, you'll be able to relax in a full sitting room. View-wise, you'll either look out over the gardens below or across the low-slung Mayfair rooftops. For longer stays, there are the 'Houses', real homes-away-from-home with small private gardens, studies and fully-equipped kitchens.

Activities

Grosvenor Square is literally your front garden, Hyde Park is only a few minutes south and the fabulous shopping on Oxford Street and Bond Street is a few minutes north. In between, lies the best of Mayfair: galleries, members' clubs and more restaurants than you could work through in a month. Walk a little further and the theatres of the West End are within easy reach, as well as Buckingham Palace and the Mall. The hardest part is choosing which way to go first.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Sunset drinks on the rooftop, looking over Grosvenor Square and across to Hyde Park, with the old embassy's giant golden eagle perched beside you.

Insiders Tip

Make a reservation at Jacqueline and enjoy a classic British teatime with an artisanal twist. It serves a hundred-odd teas by day and there's live music by night.

Something to think about

Something to think about

The look is cool, modern and pared-back with plenty of concrete, glass and straight lines. It's superbly done, but if London to you is velvet sofas and old-world plush, this isn't it.
