This is a large hotel, from the airy foyer dotted with squashy leather-covered couches to the restaurants, the huge deck and pool, and those lovely gardens (a popular wedding venue). The main restaurant, The Kiyaga, has wide views. Breakfasts here are buffet style, while lunch and dinner offer both buffet and a la carte options featuring local and international dishes. Head beyond the pool to Ziwani Café for sundowners and a BBQ, accompanied by local music and traditional dancing.
Sixty-six rooms offer accommodation for all, from standard rooms (queen-sized bed and en-suite bathroom – one of these rooms has been adapted for physically challenged guests) and en-suite family rooms (queen-sized or two twin beds), to six suites with king-sized beds, a bathroom with both tub and shower, a private sitting room and a veranda with lake views to the Congo border. Decor throughout is simple but comfortable, and all rooms have aircon, satellite TV, wi-fi and calm views.
Activities here are concentrated on the grounds, the beach or the lake. Watersports and fishing are superb, and kayaking is both thrilling and peaceful. Head to the beach for some volleyball action, play tennis, hike the surrounding countryside and, when you've had enough activity, have a holistic treatment at the Maisha Health Centre, buy locally made mementoes at the gift shop or loll beside the pool.
