Equal parts striking and serene, Southern Iceland and the Golden Circle that crowns it is one of the most photographed destinations in the world – and it deserves every one of them. A land of cascading waterfalls, glaciers and the geyser that coined the term, a road trip is very much in order. A 300 kilometre loop southeast of Reykjavik, the Golden Circle brings you blockbusters like Þingvellir National Park where you can walk the rift separating the North American and Eurasian plates and even snorkel in the glacier-clear water between them. A highlight is stopping to watch the impressive eruptions at Strokkur geyser and the two-tiered Gullfoss (the Golden Falls) drop into the gorge below. Along the South Coast, wander behind waterfalls and capture rainbows in the mist, spot nesting puffins at Dyrhólaey and catch the waves thundering onto the black-sand of Reynisfjara beach. And then there’s the rambling and wild glacier country, for langoustine-fuelled adventures and Bond-worthy vistas.

With its overwhelming natural splendour, there’s a reason that this is one of Iceland’s most iconic regions - and it just happens to be driveable, too.
Make your last fuel stop in Vík, then head east for the glacier hikes and dramatic columns of Skaftafell, or watch icebergs drifting across Jökulsárlón lake and come to a stop on the black sands of Diamond Beach.
Distances can be deceptive and the weather tends to be unpredictable, so we would avoid doing the South Coast without an overnight near Vík or Skaftafell.
