On an island famed for its natural theatricality and incredible contrasts, Iceland’s Blue Lagoon still has tourists jostling to dip into its milky-blue waters. And who can blame them? It’s spectacular, and an iconic stop on any Iceland adventure. But beyond it lies the rest of Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge emerges from the sea and you can literally cross between the North American and Eurasian plates via Leif the Lucky Bridge. The entire southwestern tip was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015, all craggy fissure swarms and lava fields, hissing steam vents and bubbling mud that come together to provide the aptly-named ‘smelliest tour in Iceland.’ The coast is dark, dramatic and wave-lashed, dotted only by nesting puffins in summer. You can’t really avoid this part of Iceland as Keflavík airport sits right on it, but don’t make the mistake of rushing off without truly experiencing the spectacle of Reykjanes.

The atmosphere of it all, from the brooding cliffs of the coast to the furious vents of Reykjanesfólkvangur reserve.
The entire peninsula is what you would call off-the-beaten-track but for a break from the elements, head for the Icelandic Museum of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Keflavík. Fascinating stuff!
After 800 years of dormancy, Reykjanes is now experiencing a new eruptive cycle. A stark reality for locals, there is always the possibility of closures and disruptions to your plans.
