Lying 150 kilometres from Antananarivo, Vakona Forest Lodge is a comfortable eco-lodge sitting on a hillside above a lake and surrounded by palms and brilliant bougainvillea. Twenty-eight bungalows are scattered between the trees. Just one kilometre away is Andasibe National Park, its rainforest alive with lemurs, indri (the largest lemur species), birds, insects and other subtropical creatures. If you're looking for high style, Vakona may not fit your idea of a subtropical holiday, but if you're serious about flora and fauna, you'll be more than happy with the accommodation, the meals and the chance to see lemurs, lots of them.

In 2018, Mantadia Lodge opened its hilltop doors outside the tiny town of Andasibe, the gateway to the rainforest. This habitat is increasingly threatened by a growing population and its insatiable desire for wood, but is also increasingly valued as a precious natural resource, attracting tourists and creating jobs, and for its intrinsic value as a scarce biome. Mantadia is still experiencing a few growing pains, but it gets a most things right and makes for a comfortable stay.

Sitting in a cloistered clearing amongst the forests and unique flora of Andasibe, Manjarano Lodge is simply beautiful. A collection of homely villas line the hillside, all overlooking a still lagoon, perfect for a morning canoe ride, and large decks offer a prime spot to see how many birds and butterflies you can spot fluttering amongst the foliage. Andasibe is known as one of the best places to see lemurs (we're talking 13 species) in the wild and you'll have plenty of opportunity to search for them. The haunting wails of the largest of them, an Indri, will often wake you in the morning.

Set beside the tranquil Sahatandra River, the lodge feels worlds away from reality and you'll be more than comfortable with the selection of amenities. Although you'll probably find that in this location all you really need is a cosy place to plop down and take in the views.
