Esteros del Iberá is an Argentine Eden with shimmering channels and lagoons that wildlife flocks to.

Just before mountains reclaim the north-west of Argentina, Esteros del Iberá is a magnificent splash of wetlands, where the wildlife rivals the lush scenery. One of the largest wetlands in the world, across its 18,000 hectares is a fantastic network of trails to explore on foot, horseback, or idyllic kayak and boat trips. As you can imagine, the birdlife is vivid, beautiful and plentiful (around 350 species have been spotted to date), and includes the roseate spoonbill, jabiru stork and strange-tailed tyrant. This wild and water-logged landscape is also home to scores of capybara, giant anteaters, maned wolves, viscachas, marsh deer, river otters, caimans and chirruping frogs galore.

What to do in Esteros del Iberá

Discover the unique and curious wildlife that dwells in Argentina's wetlands, the Gran Parque Iberá. Have your binoculars ready to spot around 350 species of birds including roseate spoonbill, strange-tailed tyrant and whistling heron. As you explore the reserve's myriad hiking trails, you may just spy maned wolves, giant river otters, caimans and the cute capybara in their numbers. If you're feeling extra adventurous, take a dip in the Balneario Cacique Ira 'pool' (there's a net to keep piranhas from joining you).

Esteros del Iberá is a wildlife-filled anomaly in the vast landscapes of Argentina, and the sight of capybaras or caimans swimming just a few metres away is one for the memory books.

Off the beaten track

Stay in the wetlands for sunset, and then embark on a nocturnal safari to spot an entirely different collection of animals including foxes, wild cats, crab-eating racoons and three species of armadillos.

This is my third adventure with Timbuktu. The service is always exceptional. Joanna has been my contact for all three trips and she communicates every step of the way and is a joy to work with. We then were connected with Veronica for our time in Argentina and Brazil, and she was the ultimate communicator during our travels. We had amazing experiences visiting our bucket list spots such as Iguazu Falls and Patagonia. The trip was filled with amazing beauty, great lodging and wonderful food. Everyone was friendly and helpful. And the icing on the cake was walking with the penguins in Ushaia at the end of our trip. Absolutely stellar travel experience.

As always, Timbuktu makes our trip planning easy and helps with every little detail along the way. FYI, Joanna is the best. We spent 12 days in Morocco and every riad was stunning, well located, with great food and attentive staff. Our driver for the trip was perfect with a friendly and helpful temperament. We visited all the sites with ease and enjoyed them all immensely. A truly wonderful trip. We have used Timbuktu previously for an amazing adventure in Kenya & Rwanda, will use them for Argentina this winter and for Cambodia the following winter. Their help and service is exceptional.
