Travel and Leisure Worlds Best Awards for number 1 tour operator in the world 2024 and number 2 tour operator in the world 2025
We're one of the World's Best Tour Operators!
Named three years running in Travel+Leisure World's Best, including No.1 in 2024
Set apart from the beach busyness of the Riviera, these cobbled hilltop towns are like stepping into a painting.

Just a short, hairpin-bend drive back from the coast, the hill villages of the Riviera's hinterland or ‘arrière-pays niçois’ feel like an entirely different country. Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the best known: ramparts guarding a warren of art galleries, the Fondation Maeght's Miró sculptures, and La Colombe d'Or, where Picasso and Chagall are said to have settled their bar tabs with paintings that still hang on its walls. Èze clings to its rock in a way that seems faintly implausible, all cactus gardens and views over a cobalt sea. Gourdon does much the same trick 760 metres up, looking clean across to Corsica on the clearest days. Then there's Grasse, which smells like nowhere else on earth (three centuries of perfumers will do that), distilling jasmine and rose into scent, the harvest in full, heady swing each August. Tourrettes-sur-Loup, the self-styled Cité des Violettes, throws its own flower festival every March. Bring good shoes and an empty stomach – you'll need it for the socca.

Things to do

What to do in Hilltop Villages of the French Riviera

Inland from the coast, the Riviera goes vertical. Èze clings to its rock 400 metres above the sea, all cobbled alleys and cacti, whilst Saint-Paul-de-Vence has the Fondation Maeght on its doorstep, with Chagall, Miró and Giacometti holding court amongst the pines. Nearby Tourrettes-sur-Loup is quieter (and famous for its violets), and Vence has the chapel Matisse designed right down to the priests' vestments. Grasse, a hop, skip and a jump further west, is where you'll blend your own perfume. The catch: by 11am in summer, Saint-Paul and Èze are rammed. Go early. Leave the afternoons to the coach parties.

Why you'll love it

Why you'll love it

The famous Riviera light, the kind that convinced Matisse and Chagall to stay for good. Wander cobbled lanes, browse serious art, then eat astonishingly well. Simple, really.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Skip Saint-Paul's coach queues for Peillon, a snail-shell spiral of vaulted alleys with barely a soul about. Or follow the Gorges du Loup to its waterfalls, cool and green even in August.

Something to think about

Something to think about

These hill towns were built for mules. Roads are narrow, hairpinned and occasionally hair-raising, and the famous ones get properly crowded by midday. Park outside the walls and go early.
