Touching the borders of Bolivia and Chile, Argentina's northernmost province is saturated with fascinating traditions dating back centuries, as well as rainbow-hued mountains and fantastic hiking trails in the land of the llamas. Your adventures will begin in the capital, San Salvador de Juyjuy, which is rich in history, vibrant markets and locro - a favourite Andean stew, which you could share with a local family. Heading north on the Ruta 9 highway, a road trip is the best way to capture Juyjuy's rugged beauty. Marvel at the pastel red, pink, orange and yellow facades of the Quebrada de Humahuaca mountains, trek across salt flats, and visit pre-Incan ruins, homages to Argentinian freedom fighters, and some of the oldest villages in the country. As you roam from peak to peak, the scenery becomes increasingly heavenly and echoes of history are palpable.

What to do in Jujuy

The northern province of Jujuy boasts striking scenery, including towering peaks and the ancient towns hidden between them, technicolour hills and cactus-studded desert. And there's no better way to see it all than on hikes into the wilderness. Jujuy also has a rich history, which you can delve into on visits to its isolated towns, from the Heroes of Independence Monument and pre-Incan ruins to the capital, San Salvador de Jujuy, where ancient Andean traditions are still upheld today. You'll have definitely worked up an appetite to try hearty locro stew - a favourite staple in Jujuy.

Something to think about

Some of the villages you will visit sit at over 8,000 feet above sea level, which can take some getting used to - and may require a jacket!

This is my third adventure with Timbuktu. The service is always exceptional. Joanna has been my contact for all three trips and she communicates every step of the way and is a joy to work with. We then were connected with Veronica for our time in Argentina and Brazil, and she was the ultimate communicator during our travels. We had amazing experiences visiting our bucket list spots such as Iguazu Falls and Patagonia. The trip was filled with amazing beauty, great lodging and wonderful food. Everyone was friendly and helpful. And the icing on the cake was walking with the penguins in Ushaia at the end of our trip. Absolutely stellar travel experience.

As always, Timbuktu makes our trip planning easy and helps with every little detail along the way. FYI, Joanna is the best. We spent 12 days in Morocco and every riad was stunning, well located, with great food and attentive staff. Our driver for the trip was perfect with a friendly and helpful temperament. We visited all the sites with ease and enjoyed them all immensely. A truly wonderful trip. We have used Timbuktu previously for an amazing adventure in Kenya & Rwanda, will use them for Argentina this winter and for Cambodia the following winter. Their help and service is exceptional.
