We would recommend a 2 night stay here to ensure you are able to tick off all the educational and excellent activities on offer. Children over the age of 12 years are welcome.

Okonjima Plains Camp

Otjiwarongo

Popular |
30 Rooms
|
From $290 per person/night
The largest and most affordable of Okonjima's accommodation options.

Okonjima Plains Camp was built on the site of the owner's original farmhouse. After a dramatic face lift the 'Barn' doors, the nickname for the main area of the camp, were officially opened. It offers comfortable and stylish accommodation for guests visiting the AfriCat Foundation project. With 30 rooms, it's a larger camp than we would usually recommend, but if you are interested in big cats and seeing how the world's most successful research and rehabilitation project works in practice, a 2 night stay here is a must.

Private luxury home fuses modern & African decor on this wildlife sanctuary

Okonjima Reserve, home the Okonjima Bush Suite, sits between Namibia's world-famous, Etosha National Park, and the county's capital, Windhoek. This 55,000 acre reserve is probably best known and loved for the AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organization that does crucial rehabilitation work with endangered African carnivores - most notably, cheetah and leopard. A stay here affords you the unique chance to get up-close to some of Africa's most iconic creatures. Waterberg Guest Farm

Otjiwarongo

4 Rooms
|
From $220 per person/night
Herero-style cabins and an updated farmhouse beneath the magical Waterberg.
Head north from Namibia's capital, Windhoek, to the Waterberg Plateau, an imposing colossus of rock where you'll find 200-million-year-old tracks of dinosaurs and reminders of the area's first human inhabitants, the San people. At its base, on the family-owned sprawl of Okosongomingo cattle ranch, you'll come across the restful Waterberg Guest Farm. Spend a couple of days here, exploring the plateau, its free-roaming wildlife (cheetah, leopard, jackal, eland, kudu, oryx, little steenbok, klipspringer and dik-dik, and a host of reptiles and birds). Recharge your travel-worn batteries with comfortable accommodation, good food and blood-red sunsets.

Babson Guest House

Otjiwarongo

3 Rooms
|
From $590 per person/night
Premium access to Namibia's famous Cheetah Conservation Fund reserve
If cheetahs are your passion, head to Babson Guest House, the only lodge for visitors in the world-renowned Cheetah Conservation Fund reserve, in northern Namibia. Here you'll find the largest population of cheetah remaining in the wild, and a conservation/research centre that offers interesting insights into cheetah conservation and rehabilitation. The reserve is a worthy destination in itself, but it's also conveniently located in the Otjiwarongo area between Windhoek (Namibia's capital) and Etosha National Park, and makes for a good stopover between the two. It's also just 13 kilometres from the striking sandstone cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau National Park.

Mundulea Bush Camp

Otjiwarongo

4 Rooms
|
From $780 per person/night
A rustic camp & exceptionally guided walks immerse you in the Namibian bush.
Mundulea Camp sits in a private reserve near the beautiful Otavi Mountains, a few hours southeast of Namibia's Etosha National Park. This is by no means a destination promising sightings of Africa's iconic, big-name wildlife. Instead, it offers the more subtle beauties of this dynamic country, which are best discovered on foot with one of the region's most well-respected guides. Bruno Nebe (also the camp's owner) conducts guided walking tours to suit guests' liking and level of fitness. This is a down-to-earth experience in every way from the camp's architecture - created to resemble a traditional Ovambo homestead - to the on-foot game viewing and the meals prepared on the fire.

Otjiwarongo

Popular |
15 Rooms
|
From $120 per person/night
Truly local lodge to explore en-route to Namibia's Etosha or Caprivi Strip.
Frans Indongo Lodge sits on a private reserve close to northern Namibia's Waterberg mountain range. The lodge has impressive, humbling origins, that speak to southern Africa's complicated history. Dr. Frans Indongo, the lodge's owner (now one of Namibia's wealthiest businessman), was born to local farm workers during the apartheid era and grew up tending livestock. Fast-forward a few decades and he's the proud patron of this reserve that offers down-to-earth local hospitality, surprising game viewing (including sable antelope, black springbok, nyala, and black and white rhino) and convenient proximity to several significant wildlife conservation partnerships.

Waterberg Wilderness Lodge

Otjiwarongo

12 Rooms
|
From $210 per person/night
A very different Namibia, with lush vegetation and mountain vistas
Namibia's landscape is not all dunes and desert. Venture north to the western fringes of the Kalahari Desert, and you'll find something completely different – a dense swathe of green scrubland and, rising above it, the Waterberg Plateau. At the base of this flat-topped mesa (it's 50 kilometres long and 16 wide) is Waterberg Wilderness Lodge, a charmingly renovated old farmstead in the eponymous 35-square-kilometre private reserve. Since 2000, the reserve's owners have dropped the internal fencing and started restoring the indigenous flora and fauna. Expect great views and hikes, endemic flora, giraffe, antelopes galore, and even white rhino.

A historic conservation haven with hippos by the pool and 230-million-year-old footprints.

Halfway between Windhoek and Etosha, the Okonjati Game Reserve stretches across a landscape that's been loved back to life by one family's conservation dream. Founded by legendary game capturer Jan Oelofse (the man whose techniques inspired the film Hatari!), this historic refuge is where Namibia's Independence Declaration was signed in 1989. With flamingos wading in the dam, hippos grunting by the waterhole, and dinosaur footprints waiting up on the hillside, there's plenty to discover beyond the game drives. The lodge blends Moroccan-inspired architecture with genuine bush hospitality, whilst the Oelofse family's dedication to conservation – including a rhino orphanage and private school – adds real substance to your stay.
