Perugia

Perugia is famed for its chocolate festival but the Etruscan walls, Gothic cathedral and the best view in Umbria suggest the city has more up its sleeve than a well-tempered truffle.

Italian life served with a dollop of medieval charm and a sprinkle of chocolate-fueled revelry.

Perched atop a hill in the heart of Umbria, this ancient city wears its history like a well-tailored suit – comfortable, distinguished, and utterly captivating. Underground escalators whisk you through Etruscan ruins straight into a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets where Renaissance palaces rub shoulders with bustling student cafés. The grand Piazza IV Novembre pulses with local life, while the imposing Palazzo dei Priori houses artistic treasures that would make Florence jealous. Chocolate aficionados will find paradise at the annual Eurochocolate festival, where the city's famed Baci chocolates take center stage. But beyond the sweet temptations lies a city of intellectual vigor, home to one of Italy's oldest universities and a renowned jazz festival that transforms summer evenings into musical magic.

Things to do

What to do in Perugia

Perugia makes a fine base for an Umbrian trip, but spending a little time in the city itself is certainly worth it. Wander the medieval lanes, descend into the underground Rocca Paolina (a papal fortress buried beneath modern Perugia), and visit the Perugina chocolate factory, makers of Italy's iconic Baci. From here, the rest of Umbria is yours to explore. Head to Deruta to watch a master ceramicist shape and paint maiolica, colourful, tin-glazed pottery, that has defined the village for centuries, then drive on to Lake Trasimeno for a winery lunch or an e-bike ride along the shores. Save a day for Orvieto, perched on a tufa cliff with its 14th-century cathedral, and of course, Assisi is right next door.

Wet Season — a good time to visit

  • Cool, often crisp days settle over the city's hilltop position, with the surrounding Umbrian valleys below frequently in mist. Walking the medieval centre on clear winter days is a real Perugian pleasure.

  • The escalators up through the Rocca Paolina come into their own. Walking the underground passages of the 16th-century papal fortress, with its preserved medieval streets running beneath the modern city, is wonderfully atmospheric in winter.

  • Baci Perugina and the city's chocolate culture lean into winter. Head to Sandri (the historic Corso Vannucci pasticceria) for hot chocolate and the chocolate factory for tastings.
