The homelands of ancient Andean empires and one of the most left-alone regions in Argentina, the northwest is entirely enchanting. Salta is its capital and the base for most explorations, but this historic city also boasts one of the finest Incan heritage museums as well as some of the very first Spanish structures built in Argentina - and a permanently convivial atmosphere too. Spend at least one evening on the top of Cerro San Bernardo for fabulous panoramic views over this bright, buzzing city. During the day, meander south through sleepy villages, and explore the hypnotic landscapes from cloud forests to canyons, where weather and time has left behind incredible rock formations (and activities galore). Don't forget to sample the famous Torrontes wine in Cafayate either!

What to do in Salta

One of the least-visited destinations in Argentina, the Northwest has a bounty of national parks. The main hub is Salta, full of historic architecture and the fantastic Incan heritage museum. From here, set off with a guide in the direction of your choice, whether that's hiking across the surreal salt flats or into the jungle, marvelling at the formidable 'Arrows of the gods' and watching the sunset over the Hill of Seven Colours, or sipping on the wines of Cafayate. You could even end off your experience with a ride on the Train to the Clouds...

This is my third adventure with Timbuktu. The service is always exceptional. Joanna has been my contact for all three trips and she communicates every step of the way and is a joy to work with. We then were connected with Veronica for our time in Argentina and Brazil, and she was the ultimate communicator during our travels. We had amazing experiences visiting our bucket list spots such as Iguazu Falls and Patagonia. The trip was filled with amazing beauty, great lodging and wonderful food. Everyone was friendly and helpful. And the icing on the cake was walking with the penguins in Ushaia at the end of our trip. Absolutely stellar travel experience.

As always, Timbuktu makes our trip planning easy and helps with every little detail along the way. FYI, Joanna is the best. We spent 12 days in Morocco and every riad was stunning, well located, with great food and attentive staff. Our driver for the trip was perfect with a friendly and helpful temperament. We visited all the sites with ease and enjoyed them all immensely. A truly wonderful trip. We have used Timbuktu previously for an amazing adventure in Kenya & Rwanda, will use them for Argentina this winter and for Cambodia the following winter. Their help and service is exceptional.

We are so thankful to Timbuktu for planning the honeymoon of our dreams! All of the staff members at each destination were excellent, cordial, timely, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be around.. We never experienced delays in our travels, all of our tours ran as planned, and the food and wine was superb. The hard work had been done for us, and we really did only have to enjoy the full immersion experience in Argentina.
