Victoria Falls
The dilemma with Victoria Falls is a familiar one: do you want a safari, or do you want the falls? The answer, at this tented camp on the banks of the Masuwe River, is a firm both. Operated by Wild Horizons — the largest eco-tourism outfit in the area — the lodge sits within a 4,500-acre private wildlife sanctuary inside Victoria Falls National Park, where elephants, crocodiles and a reliable cast of other wildlife treat the riverbank as their own. The mist from Mosi-Oa-Tunya hangs on the skyline. The falls themselves are a twenty-minute transfer away. This is not a compromise between two experiences — it's a genuinely well-placed base for all of them, designed by Craig White with the same solar-powered, plastic-free sustainability credentials that run through Wild Horizons' other properties. The chitenge fabric cushion covers and handmade local touches give the whole place a warmth that the word "eco" doesn't always promise.

Life perched 180 metres above the Zambezi in Zimbabwe's most dramatic gorge setting.
Clinging to the edge of the Batoka Gorge, just a short drive from Victoria Falls, this brand-new ultra-luxury retreat manages to feel wonderfully remote. The name Bupenyu means 'life' in the local Nambya language, which seems rather fitting when you're gazing down at the Zambezi thundering 180 metres below your feet. Designed by Experience Architects with cantilevered forms that echo the engineering legacy of the historic railway bridge visible downriver, stone-clad passageways lead through miombo woodland to eleven cliffside suites and a two-bedroom villa. Each comes with floor-to-ceiling glass, gorge-facing plunge pools and a design ethos that celebrates rather than competes with the landscape. It's sophisticated, eco-conscious and opening in December 2025.

With its back to teak forest, the whole lodge looks out across open savannah, affording plenty of opportunities for game viewing – from the privacy of your bed or personal patio; from the pool or firepit; from a tree-top platform or hide. And, of course, from a game-drive vehicle or on a guided walking safari. With its own private entrance into Hwange National Park, Sable Valley offers a superb spread of safari options.

Imagine waking up in a beautifully appointed treehouse, watching the sunrise light up the treetops that surround you. Think about stepping through your glass doors onto your deck, enjoying fresh Zimbabwean coffee, surrounded by birds and an elephant walking below. Followed by a day spent in a very remote part of a vast wilderness that you share with very few people.

Hwange
For those who believe safari is best experienced at a slower pace, this tucked away camp in the remote northern reaches of Hwange National Park delivers in spades. Nestled beneath mahogany and jackalberry trees on an exclusive 80,000 hectare concession, Bumbusi is a magnet for wildlife, particularly elephants who, flock to the spring fed waterhole as the dry season takes hold. Walking safaris are the main event here, with gorges, river valleys and rocky outcrops creating terrain that begs to be explored on foot. But it's the historical dimension that truly sets this camp apart. The nearby Bumbusi National Monument, with its Great Zimbabwe style ruins and rock engravings dating back millennia, adds a layer of depth you simply won't find elsewhere.

Hwange
In the remote northern reaches of Zimbabwe's largest national park, where the basalt plains give way to kopjes, mopane woodland and seasonal vleis, sits a camp with a story that rewards curiosity. The camp, recently revived under private management after years under ZimParks, sits in one of the most wildlife-rich pockets of the park: buffalo herds of over 2,000 animals still roam this area, and the density of lion that follows them is, by the park's own reckoning, the highest within its boundaries. Add regular cheetah, wild dog, roan, sable and tsessebe to the picture, and you have one of the more compelling wildlife destinations in southern Africa — at a fraction of what its Botswana neighbours charge. This is an honest, value-driven safari camp, and it knows exactly what it is.

While most visitors to Mana Pools head for the famous Zambezi floodplains, those in the know make a beeline inland to the Chitake River system – and it's here you'll find this raw, unfiltered gem. Perched on a bluff 50 metres above the dry riverbed, Mhara occupies a private concession that was untouched for centuries before the camp opened in 2022. The wildlife action is nothing short of extraordinary: lion prides patrol the sands below, enormous buffalo herds kick up dust clouds as they thunder to the springs, and elephants dig for water mere metres from your tent. It's walking safari country at its finest, with the legendary Chitake Gorge on your doorstep and guides who grew up in this wilderness. Come here for proper bush immersion – the kind that leaves fresh lion tracks outside your tent each morning.
