Travel and Leisure Worlds Best Awards for number 1 tour operator in the world 2024 and number 2 tour operator in the world 2025
We're one of the World's Best Tour Operators!
Named three years running in Travel+Leisure World's Best, including No.1 in 2024
Prayer flags, butter tea and a mountain town home to the Dalai Lama.

Two towns, really, stacked one on top of the other. Down in Dharamshala proper, life carries on much as anywhere else in Kangra, but climb the switchbacks to McLeod Ganj, nine hundred metres higher, and you're suddenly in Little Lhasa. This has been the Dalai Lama's home since 1959, and the Tsuglagkhang Temple, Namgyal Monastery and the Tibet Museum sit at the heart of a community that fled Tibet and rebuilt its world here, prayer flags, butter lamps and all. Narrow lanes smell of incense and simmering thukpa, with momos on every corner and the occasional monk debating loudly outside a monastery gate. Above town, Bhagsu's modest waterfall and the pine-clad climb to Triund (register at Gallu Devi first, permit in hand) draw a steady stream of backpackers, while below, one of the world's highest-altitude cricket grounds sits rather incongruously among the deodars. It's equal parts pilgrimage site, trekking base and hippy retreat, and somehow all three work.

Why you'll love it

Why you'll love it

The Dalai Lama's home temple, a monastery soundtrack of chanting and debate, and a trek to Triund that rewards you with a mountain panorama you won't stop talking about.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Skip McLeod Ganj's cafés for sleepy Dharamkot, all pottery studios and meditation retreats, or take the quieter Baijnath road via Norbulingka Institute and Gyuto Monastery.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Triund needs a permit and registration at Gallu Devi Temple, and it's tougher than the blogs suggest. Pack proper boots, and skip it in winter snow if you're a beginner.
