Encircled by Vauban's magnificent 17th-century sea walls and overlooking Port Vauban, the largest marina in Europe, Antibes is a little more down to earth than the rest of the Riviera… the relaxed little sister who doesn’t take herself too seriously perhaps? The covered market on Cours Masséna, stalls overflowing with cheese, olives and Provençal herbs, attracts locals by the bucket-load and the tiny terrace cafés tucked between the stalls feel a world away from the marina. For culturalists, Château Grimaldi, now the Musée Picasso after his famous four-month residency in 1946, is an excellent afternoon and if you’re looking for some well-earned beach time, head south of town. There’s Cap d'Antibes, a pine-fringed headland of coastal paths and crumbling Belle Époque villas, and Juan-les-Pins, just around the headland, with its sandy beaches and eponymous jazz festival.

What to do in Antibes

Antibes is the Riviera's grown-up. It has ramparts, a covered Provençal market and a Picasso museum inside the Château Grimaldi, where the artist spent a prolific autumn in 1946. Down in Port Vauban, some of the Mediterranean's biggest yachts moor in the shadow of the star-shaped Fort Carré. Round the cape, Juan-les-Pins is louder and sandier, with late bars and the Jazz à Juan festival every July (Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis both played the pine grove here). We'd also slip inland to Vallauris for a private visit to a celebrated ceramicist's atelier, in the town where Picasso first got his hands dirty with clay. Antibes for peace, Juan for the party.

We have travelled with Timbuktu multiple times, They are always helpful and look after us well. Carola helped us plan the trip within our budget and also mindful of our interests and preferences. Guide - Friendly, kind and very knowledgable. Happy to accommodate any preferences we have and tailor the plan to include a few extra recommendations once he got to know us and also according to the weather on the day. Very experienced in guiding while also giving us personal space. Perfectly spoken English. Driver - Friendly, kind and safe driver. Kept the car very clean. Car - Nice and comfortable SUV with plenty of space. The holiday itself is always curated well and to our preference. They ensure we can see the attractions and time it well to allow minimal crowds. Days aren’t too packed so there is time for relaxation. Hotels are chosen well to accommodate budget and preferences. Happy to travel with Timbuktu again.
