What to do in Kathmandu Valley
The Kathmandu Valley is Nepal condensed into one extraordinary bowl of history, chaos, and charm. Kathmandu itself hits you with all the sensory overload you'd expect – rickshaws weaving through temple-studded squares, incense drifting from shrines tucked between phone shops, and the great stupa of Boudhanath drawing pilgrims who circle its whitewashed dome at dawn and dusk. Cross the river to Patan for a gentler pace: its Durbar Square is arguably the finest of the three, and the backstreets reveal metalworkers and thangka painters keeping centuries-old crafts alive. But it's Bhaktapur that really stops you in your tracks – a medieval time capsule where the old town is largely car-free, potters spin their wheels in sunlit squares, and the five-tiered Nyatapola Temple rises above terracotta rooftops. Don't leave without trying juju dhau, the famously creamy 'king yogurt' that Bhaktapur guards as a point of local pride. Three cities, three distinct personalities, and all within an hour of each other.
