A higgledy-piggledy old town, flower markets and some of the best street food in France

Part of Italy until 1860 and annexed by France just 166 years ago, the architecture of Nice is more than reminiscent of Italy with its Baroque churches, beautiful terracotta facades and remains of Roman Baths at the Musée d’Archéologie. But then comes the unmistakable French-ness: the colourful Vieille Ville or Old Town, full of higgledy-piggledy buildings and sun-drenched squares lined with cafés and croissants; the Cours Saleya Market that fills every morning with flowers and food stalls; and the unmistakable scent of socca, a Nicois snack of chickpea pancakes sprinkled with olive oil and black pepper. And of course, there’s the Promenade des Anglais, the long seafront walkway that, despite being built by the English in the 1820s, is the place for that most French of pastimes: a gentle, après dinner stroll.

Things to do

What to do in Nice

Nice rewards an appetite. On a food tour of the Old Town, you'll taste socca, the chickpea pancake served scorching hot from the pan, and pissaladière, the local onion tart heaped with sticky onions, anchovies and black olives. On the cooking class, you'll shop the morning market with your chef before making a proper Niçois lunch. For art, visit the Chagall museum, built to house his seventeen-painting Biblical Message, and the Musée Matisse up in leafy Cimiez, where the artist spent his last years. In between, the Promenade des Anglais curves around the Baie des Anges, its water shading from turquoise to cobalt. Just know the beaches are pebbles, not sand. Pack water shoes. Or a very good book.

Winter Season — a good time to visit

  • Nice in January is mild and bright, with 13°C / 55°F days and the Baie des Anges glittering in the low winter sun.

  • On 1 January, hundreds of hardy swimmers plunge into the Baie des Anges for the traditional New Year's Day dip (bravado optional).

  • Socca, the chickpea pancake baked in roaring wood ovens in the old town, is the ideal winter snack, eaten scalding hot with lots of black pepper.

  • Beach restaurants are mostly closed and evenings can be chilly, so pack a proper coat.
