The Lake District Trips & Tours

With its wild fells and mirror-still lakes, the Lake District is England at its most dramatically beautiful.

All brooding fells and ever-changing skies, the Lake District is one of England's largest national parks and has drawn visitors from far and wide ever since the time of William Wordsworth. He even wrote one of England's first travel guides to the region in 1820, which is a good indication of how long the landscape has been impossible to resist. Highlights include Grasmere for Wordsworth's Dove Cottage and Sarah Nelson's legendary gingerbread shop (in business since 1854); Cartmel for a table at Simon Rogan's extraordinary two-Michelin-star restaurant, L'Enclume; Near Sawrey for Beatrix Potter's picturesque Hill Top farm; and Wastwater, the deepest and most remote of the lakes, for the most outstanding view. You might need to pack for all four seasons in a single day and book your accommodation well in advance, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Things to do

What to do in The Lake District

The Lake District asks you to slow right down, then hands you a dozen reasons to speed back up again. Take a private boat out on Windermere, England's largest lake, or follow Beatrix Potter's trail to Hill Top, the farmhouse that inspired Peter Rabbit and his mischief. Wordsworth fans should make the pilgrimage to Dove Cottage, the man practically invented the Lake District as a literary subject, before a quieter sail across Coniston Water or Derwentwater from Keswick. If you'd rather move under your own steam (sorry), a guided fell walk with a mountain guide gets you properly up into the fells, while a heritage steam railway does the climbing for you. Don't miss Castlerigg Stone Circle at golden hour; its ring of stones is older than Stonehenge's, with the fells rising behind like an audience. Bring a flask. And good boots.

Why you'll love it

Why you'll love it

The fell walks, whether you’re tackling all 978 metres of Scafell Pike, England's highest point, or a gentle lakeside stroll.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Wasdale Head, a tiny hamlet at the foot of Scafell Pike, is about as remote as England gets. There’s only a cluster of stone farms, a tiny medieval church and a 19th century inn, and it’s so worth the effort.

Something to think about

Something to think about

In late September and October, the bracken turns rust-red on the fell and, happily, the crowds thin out a little, making it a particularly good time.
