Our favourite mobile safaris in Africa

One-of-a-kind safaris on the move.

Let’s talk about getting back to basics. A no-holds-barred lodge has its place on every safari-goer’s wishlist, but what about the other end of the scale? The end where walls and windows are a thing of the past, and swimming pools are replaced by starlit skies; where tiny, canvas-clothed camps find home in the remotest corners of the continent; and where an authentic safari experience awaits, a dedicated guide by your side and the chance to move to wherever the wild things are…Let’s talk mobile safaris.

Uncharted Expedition Camp

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Picture walking across unexplored islands, mokoro rides down glassy waterways and locking eyes with the incredible wildlife of the Okavango Delta. This dreamy scenario becomes a reality with Uncharted Expeditions, one of our favourite mobile safaris, where your camp changes location every few days. Whilst you enjoy the marvels of the Delta alongside seasoned guides, the team will set up tents with piping-hot bucket showers and views of splashing elephant, and whip up three-course dinners over the fire to be served under the inky sky.

Offbeat Mara horse riding safari

Masai Mara, Kenya

Is there a finer way to see the Great Migration in all its heart-pumping glory than by horseback? On a week-long voyage across the Masai Mara (totalling 250 km), you’ll ride for between 4 – 6 hours each day, joining the throngs of galloping wildebeest as they cross rushing rivers, walking amongst elephant and tracking lion (who barely notice you’re there). Depending on your route, camp may be set up on a scenic river bank or cliffside where you’ll be rewarded with a hot shower and G&Ts. This is the stuff epic mobile safaris are about…

Robin Pope walking safari

South Luangwa, Zambia

In the home of the walking safari (aka Zambia), search the water, land and skies for wildlife on an epic 5-day expedition. Led by your guide and an armed game scout, you’ll trace the Mupamhadzi River, walking up to 10 km each day (taking around 4 hours). Spot vast herds of elephant and big cats whilst getting to know the landscape in finer detail. Camp will move three times, but always sits in a shady grove beside the river, and supplies hearty meals (sometimes served in the shallows) and comfortable beds.

Ol Malo Nomad

Laikipia, Kenya

Say goodbye to the well-trodden paths on one of Ol Malo’s mobile safaris into the wilds of northern Laikipia. On a safari tailor made for you, you’ll journey by foot, camel or horseback (or a combination of all three), stopping to set up a fly-camp and sleep beneath a sea of stars. Up the ante with a truly breathtaking flight in a doors-off helicopter! Soar over Suguta Valley, where there’s wildlife in every direction and the views are unmatched, then touch down for a picnic beside flamingo-filled Lake Turkana.
