Kandy Trips & Tours

Be lured by the laidback lifestyle and on-tap history and culture in this beautiful once-royal city.
Deep in the heart of the island and the most southerly point of the Cultural Triangle, sweet-sounding Kandy certainly lives up to its name. Perched in an enviable lake-side location, backed by drapes of emerald mountains and rolling hills and whispered over by a delicate Hill Country breeze, it’s famously known as one of the most picturesque cities in the country – and we won’t be arguing with that. Built in 1357 CE, it was the capital of Sri Lanka from 1592 until the British took over in the 19thcentury and today, it’s vibrant, lively, bursting with history and liberally scattered with shrines and beautiful Kandyian architecture. None, however, are more gasp-worthy than the golden-roofed, elephant-guarded Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most significant shrine in the country and home to Buddha’s tooth said to have been collected from his funeral pyre in India in 483 BC.
Things to do

What to do in Kandy

The southernmost point of the Cultural Triangle and the gateway to Sri Lanka's Hill Country, Kandy is the destination that has it all. Delve into its history on a walkabout or tuk tuk ride through the city, admiring the ornate architecture and stopping at the iconic Temple of the Sacred Tooth where you can see Buddha's tooth. You can really get under the skin of Kandy with a visit to its markets or a lesson in traditional drumming. Natural beauty abounds and a stroll alongside the lake is a must, its surface reflecting the soaring hills and mountains, or enjoy the cool atmosphere of its once-royal gardens. Set your sights a little further afield for a day of hiking in the Knuckles Mountains or spending time with elephants on their own turf.

Why you'll love it

Why you'll love it

Just wandering. From the Botanical Gardens, modelled on London’s Kew, to the temples, elegant mansions and suitcase-stuffing markets, we couldn’t think of a better place to spend a couple of days sauntering.
Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Two hours north of Kandy is the Knuckles Mountain Range, so called for its spiny folds and ridges that look similar to a clenched first, and home to buffalo, leopard, stunning flora and excellent hiking. Well worth an exploration.
Something to think about

Something to think about

Many will tell you that July, during the Esala Perahara festival when the sacred tooth is paraded through the streets, is the only time to visit but actually, the mild climate and plethora of sights mean that Kandy is an excellent addition to a trip at any time of year.
