Named after the country homes of Malabar royalty, the resort taps into simple, seaside living without skimping on the comfort levels. Built in the style of traditional fishing huts, the cottages are decorated with the wooden carvings done by craftsmen who usually restore temples. Not only is the guesthouse discreetly located, it's small, so takes just a few visitors at a time. Come for the sights, the winelands and the lovely town, but also for your health – there's a sauna, a natural swimming pool and a second ozonated heated pool. Practise your asanas in the studio or garden (many Cape Town yoga centres host retreats at Angala), and relax in luxurious accommodation.

It's an unassuming sanctuary with just six tents, so this is the place to go if you're looking to experience the wilderness and its wild inhabitants in peace. Led by highly-experienced guides who know the landscape like their own backyard, game drives and bush walks will take you closer than ever to the Kruger wildlife - and even when you're in camp, there's a strong chance of an elephant wandering along the pathways! The camp has stayed true to its founder and namesake, George Huysamer, weaving together art, nature and heritage in one sublime package. Still in the family today, you'll feel well and truly taken care of, especially in one of the dapper suites, beautifully positioned along the dry riverbed.

Beck's Safari Lodge

Modern safari elegance between the mountain and bushveld
Becks Safari Lodge could not be in a prettier setting – it perches on the banks of the Makhutsi River, with views across the landscape to the distant Drakensberg escarpment. It's the flagship lodge of Karongwe Private Game Reserve, a 9,000-hectare property whose many natural gifts include three rivers that feed it, ecosystems that range from savanna and woodland to rocky outcrops, and undulating hills that make for dynamic game drives. This is Big Five country, and the viewing is easy. We were struck by the luxurious hospitality of this small lodge; it's the perfect setting for a romantic break.

Pafuri Camp

Northern Kruger

19 Rooms
|
From $520 per person/night
Enjoy river views and stylish interiors at this hidden gem in a private Kruger concession.
The northern reaches of the beloved Kruger National Park are amongst the most diverse in the area, and a staggering three-quarters of the park's animal and plant life occur here. Think sparkling floodplains dotted with baobab and mahogany trees, as well as leopard hiding in the fever trees and lion roaming the rocky gorges. And in the midst of it all, in the heart of the Makulele Concession and overlooking the Luvuvhu River, is pretty Pafuri Camp. Despite its 52 beds, there's an intimate atmosphere and a magical safari charm, topped off with excellent guiding and down-to-earth, efficient hospitality. Are we allowed to say it might be one of our favourite camps in the Kruger?!

Kruger Shalati

Southern Kruger

31 Rooms
|
From $560 per person/night
A novel train-hotel located high above the Sabie River and surveying the southern Kruger.
When the Kruger Park’s first warden, James Steven-Hamilton, hosted visitors nearly one-hundred years ago, they would arrive by train. The eccentric entertainer would wine and dine them in the bush in a make-shift boma, complete with live piano music, fine china and rangers pacing the periphery. When it was time for bed, they would retreat back to the train cars to sleep in plush cabins. Kruger Shalati aims to conjure memories of this exceptional history by setting itself in a restored train, right on the now disused Selati Bridge – right where ol’ Hamilton once parked his. Though it's no longer a locomotive (and entirely stationary) this is an arresting destination, with elevated views and exalted hospitality.

Jabulani Safari

Kapama

6 Rooms
|
From $1.6K per person/night
Elegant sundowners and elephant encounters

Centred around a waterhole in the Kapama Game Reserve near Hoedspruit in Limpopo, Camp Jabulani is an exclusive safari lodge in this Big Five landscape. There may be many other camps of similar description in the Greater Kruger Park area, but Jabulani is different – it has a resident herd of trained elephants and is the only camp that offers night safaris on elephant back. Interacting with these intelligent and gracious mammals is a magical experience. The camp is small – there are just six suites – and the service is up there with the very best.

Perched on a dramatic promontory just south of Positano, this family-owned Relais & Châteaux landmark has been seducing guests since 1970. The brainchild of local visionary Carlino Cinque, the entire hotel was, incredibly, carved into the cliff face by hand and every terrace, pathway and tumbling garden feels as though it grew naturally from the rock itself. With a Michelin-starred restaurant stocked with produce from the terraced gardens, a private beach reached by an elevator drilled through 88 metres of solid cliff, and views that stretch from Praiano to Capri, this is the Amalfi Coast at its most glamorous.

From $1.5K per person/night
An elegant and sophisticated slice of the Mara
Just like wonderful owners Tanya and Mike Carr-Hartley, Sala’s Camp is proudly Kenyan. The entire camp is made from canvas manufactured in the country, staff are all employed from surrounding Maasai villages and each guest contributes $5 to the Rhino Monitoring Team in the Mara. And if that’s not enough to persuade you to visit then the location might be… Sala’s occupies one of the best positions in the Masai Mara on the confluence of the Sand and Keekorok rivers and is the first camp to greet the wildebeest of the Great Migration as they pound across the river from the Serengeti. Magical.
