Beho Beho Camp

Nyerere National Park

8 Rooms
|
From $1.7K per person/night
Traditional stone cottages in a beautiful, peaceful area of Nyerere.
Beho Beho was the first accommodation to be built in the cooler highlands of the Nyerere National Park ('The Selous'). It's a private, family-owned camp overlooking a river gorge that carves through the famed reserve and the views are spot on. Sleeping-wise, there are nine spacious palm-leaf and stone cottages (or bandas), spread out to either side of the main house and there's also a treehouse for a more intimate night-time wildlife experience. As well as excellent game viewing, expect to be fed and watered extremely well and your every request catered for.

Roho ya Selous

Nyerere National Park

Popular
A fresh and funky camp in the heart of the best game viewing area in Nyerere.

With two rather lovely camps in Ruaha under their belts, the clever chaps at Asilia Africa have expanded to the Nyerere National Park ('The Selous'). Combining Nyerere and Ruaha make an excellent combination in Tanzania’s slightly more off-the-beaten track southern circuit, and this spangly camp is as good as ever. It’s in a waterside spot in one of the best game-viewing areas in the reserve and you can expect funky, stretch-canvas tents, all with views out to pods of harrumphing hippos, a good array of water- and land-based activities and a healthy dose of that genuine Asilia charm. Sounds good to us!

Selous Impala

Nyerere National Park

8 Rooms
|
From $530 per person/night
A rustic riverside retreat in one of the world's largest game reserves.

You can’t talk about Nyerere National Park ('The Selous') without mentioning the Rufiji River, the pulsing lifeblood of the area that virtually dissects the park in two and attracts a mesmerising array of animals. The camp's position on the banks of the waterway is unbeatable and, in our opinion, the best in the park. Its 8 tents tucked within a shady grove of trees are raised on stilts, allowing you a bird's-eye view of the splashing hippo below and the game on the opposite bank. The camp is flanked by two lakes, Mzizimia and Siwandu, which also offer great game and bird sightings throughout the year.

Bailey's Banda

Nyerere National Park

2 Rooms
|
From $2.1K per person/night
Enjoy the privacy of this stunning, exclusive-use villa in a quiet corner of Nyerere.
Far from Dar es Salaam's bustling busyness, Nyerere National Park ('The Selous') is a 54,000-square-kilometre game reserve that's both the biggest in Africa and a World Heritage Site. Bailey's Banda lies in its southwest, blending into the landscape on a hill overlooking sister Beho Beho main camp. It's a lovely stone cottage, with just two bedrooms and a touch of oh là là about the atmosphere. Wildlife sightings in the area are splendid, and there's birding to satisfy the most demanding birders. If you're after exclusivity in the wilderness for your family, and some seriously dedicated service, you'll find it here in spades.

Lake Manze Camp

Nyerere National Park

Popular |
12 Rooms
|
From $570 per person/night
A rustic, adventure-style camp that's great value for money in an even better location.
Lake Manze Camp is in the centre of Tanzania's Nyerere National Park ('The Selous'), one of the oldest and largest tracts of protected land in Africa. The area is home to a plethora of habitats, with diverse wildlife to match. As the Rufiji River passes through on its way to the Indian Ocean, there are 100-meter-deep gorges, vast Miombo woodlands and sprawling wetlands. While lauded as a gem for biodiversity and wildlife conservation, only the northern sector (five percent of the reserve) is dedicated to photographic safaris; the rest of the reserve is comprised of hunting concessions. The camp itself is low-key, and tends to be popular with a budget-minded crowd. Simply accessed by plane, the camp is open seasonally - June through March.

This UNESCO-listed wildlife reserve is on many safari enthusiasts' bucket lists but is often overlooked as travellers head to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. 7 Rooms
|
From $650 per person/night
Old-school charm and easy access to Tanzania's Nyerere National Park
At 55,000 square kilometers, Nyerere National Park ('The Selous') is one of the largest and wildest game reserves in Africa. Selous Riverside Safari Camp is located (along with quite a few other lodges) just outside the park's eastern gate, on the banks of the Rufiji River. It is tucked nicely away into the lush riparian woodland which largely retains the bush feel you're going for. There's plenty of peace and quiet to be had, besides the chirping birds and barking baboons, as well as adventures to be sought inside the park, which is home to a huge diversity of wildlife. Although maybe a little tired around the edges, the camp maintains the classic safari style of old, and a relaxed riverside atmosphere.

Rufiji River Camp

Nyerere National Park

14 Rooms
|
From $390 per person/night
Unpretentious riverfront camp in Tanzania's diverse Nyerere National Park
Though lesser-known, Nyerere National Park in eastern Tanzania is one of the largest game reserves in the world. Indeed, it is as beautiful as it is important, protecting the country's coastal plateau region. Rufiji River Camp offers a waterfront setting and down-to-earth vibe; a welcome alternative to pricier safari options across the country. Expect varied game, especially during the dry season, though lower densities than regions like Tanzania's Serengeti. The Reserve is open from June through February. Note that while Rufiji falls within an area dedicated exclusively to photographic safaris, hunting is permitted on other sections of the Reserve.
