Praiano sits roughly seven kilometres from both Positano and Amalfi, but stays mercifully out of their crowds. Hotel Onda Verde is built into the cliff here — five former villas, 25 sea-view rooms with hand-painted Vietri tiles, and a pool tucked among terraced gardens. The Milano family runs it, and it shows in the welcome. A path drops to La Praia's pebble beach below, and a small jetty makes water taxis to Positano and Capri delightfully easy.

Nehimba is an intimate camp with a classic safari feel. It sits on the edge of the mopane woodlands that typify northern Hwange and the Kalahari sandvelt of the southern region. Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest reserve and an ecologically significant wilderness area, attracting an estimated 30,000 elephants in its dry season. Many of these elephants will surely pay a visit to the year-round waterhole at the centre of Nehimba, giving you amazing sightings from the comfort of the camp. This waterhole becomes an especially lively hub for several species during the dry winter months (June to October). Nehimba is just a three-hour drive from the iconic Victoria Falls, so it offers a convenient safari addition to one of the most popular attractions in all of Africa.

Just 24 kilometres (15 miles) upstream from Victoria Falls, Chundukwa River Lodge is set on, and above (the buildings are stilted), the wide, fast-flowing Zambezi. Here you can have your cake and eat it – enjoy the tranquillity of the riverfront position, knowing that, just a short journey downstream, the Victoria Falls thunder into their gorge, offering activities galore for nature-lovers and adrenalin junkies alike.
