Ehlane Plains Camp

Serengeti

8 Rooms
|
From $870 per person/night
Wild Africa comes alive at this luxurious Serengeti safari camp.
Ehlane (the Zulu word for wilderness) is an apt name for this glamorous tented camp in a remote, seemingly endless corner of the eastern Serengeti. This is where, for part of the year, wildebeest and other herbivores can be seen swarming across the savanna in search of greener pastures, followed by carnivores hoping for an easy meal. At the heart of this lovely eight-tented camp is the dining and lounge area, where swapping stories of the day's adventures is invigorating. Break bread and plan the next day's activities – whichever you choose, you're bound to see the fabulous Big Five.

The Mombo concession is renowned for offering some of the best big game viewing in all of Africa. Both camps are also eco friendly, solar-powered, and involved in a number of conservation projects including the reintroduction of the black and white rhino.

Ang'ata Migration Bologonja Camp

Serengeti

12 Rooms
|
From $280 per person/night
Catch all the action of the Great Migration at this rustic Serengeti camp
Located near the Bologonja Ranger Post in the northern sector of Tanzania's famed Serengeti, this charming semi-permanent camp is open from July to October, when the Great Wildebeest Migration is at its peak. It's about an hour's drive from the Mara River, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra brave the crocodile-infested waters on their way to Kenya's Maasai Mara every year. But the action starts right in camp where you're likely to be surrounded by a dizzying glut of wildebeest and the sounds of lions and hyenas. You'll also be treated to warm hospitality from the staff, a distinctive feature of the Ang'ata brand.

Mahali Mzuri

Masai Mara

12 Rooms
|
From $1.8K per person/night
A contemporary take on perfection in a private conservancy of the Mara.
Mahali Mzuri, meaning, quite simply, ‘Beautiful Place’, is an ultra-luxurious, ultra-modern tented camp in the private Motorogi Conservancy, about 24 kilometres north-east of Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve. The camp shares traversing rights with neighbouring Olare Orok Reserve, allowing visitors access to a 130-square-kilometre game-viewing area. And there's lots to see. Like the Mara, Motorogi brims with wildlife; unlike the Mara, it's far less visited, so your sightings will be uninterrupted by other safari vehicles. (However, we still recommend a trip to the main reserve!) Visit between July and October to witness the thundering Great Migration passing through.

A stay at Seba offers, among other gems, the benefit of learning more about this project from the passionate guides and researchers.

Grumeti River Camp

Serengeti

10 Rooms
|
From $1.5K per person/night
Breakfast with hippos at this excellent, laid-back Serengeti camp
Grumeti River Camp was recently replaced by &beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp. Set on the Grumeti River, a perennial waterway in the far western Serengeti, Grumeti River Camp is one of Africa's finest. If you prefer a safari destination that's luxurious but rustic enough to allow you to get an authentic feeling of being in the wild, you'll be thrilled with this camp. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, the large, quirkily decorated tents (with all mod cons), the pool and open-sided restaurant, the twice-daily game drives, the rich birdlife and the diversity of animals attracted to the river. Visit between late May and July to see the annual wildebeest migration pass through.

Mara Expedition Camp

Masai Mara

6 Rooms
|
From $1.2K per person/night
A touch of eco-class in the north-central Masai Mara
Mara Expedition Camp is so light on the landscape, it could be removed within days without a trace it was ever there. But that's not to say is misses any of the luxuries of a permanent camp, and each tent is decorated beautifully in the way of the early African explorers – brass chandeliers, old Indian campaign chests, and rich leather and hardwood furniture. The beautiful camp is one thing, but it's the Mara wilderness - the wide open plains dotted with thousands of animals - that really steal the show here. And Mara Expedition's prime location in a private glade of leafy acacia trees with easy access to the Masai Mara National Reserve and Mara North Conservancy, puts you in the best place to explore it all.

Tubu Tree Camp

Central Okavango

8 Rooms
|
From $1.6K per person/night
The perfect mix of water and land safari

This relatively small tented camp is situated on Hunda Island, the largest island in the Jao reserve, on the western side of the Okavango Delta. While its sister camps Little Tubu, Kwetsani, Jacana and Jao, are more wetland focused, Tubu offers some of the best dryland viewing in the area. The camp has its own airstrip, which adds to the sense of exclusivity. Its surrounding forests are a great space to see leopard, while its other areas offer a consistent variety of typical large and small Delta game.
