Lake Manze Camp

Nyerere National Park

Popular |
12 Rooms
|
From $570 per person/night
A rustic, adventure-style camp that's great value for money in an even better location.
Lake Manze Camp is in the centre of Tanzania's Nyerere National Park ('The Selous'), one of the oldest and largest tracts of protected land in Africa. The area is home to a plethora of habitats, with diverse wildlife to match. As the Rufiji River passes through on its way to the Indian Ocean, there are 100-meter-deep gorges, vast Miombo woodlands and sprawling wetlands. While lauded as a gem for biodiversity and wildlife conservation, only the northern sector (five percent of the reserve) is dedicated to photographic safaris; the rest of the reserve is comprised of hunting concessions. The camp itself is low-key, and tends to be popular with a budget-minded crowd. Simply accessed by plane, the camp is open seasonally - June through March.

Want to get really close to nature? Experience wildlife of all sizes from Kichaka Bush Camp. This three-year-old venture was established in a remote section of Tanzania’s Ruaha Park by safari leader Andrew ‘Moli’ Molinaro and his partner Noelle Herzog. It's a camp for serious nature lovers – although the tents are spacious and comfortable and the dining is freshly fabulous, this is not the place to visit if you're looking for cocktails and spa treatments. You're not at the movies here – you'll be creating a personal wildlife experience you'll simply never forget. And you'll be back...

Tembo House Hotel

Stone Town

38 Rooms
|
From $70 per person/night
A characterful, landmark hotel in a beachfront location in Stone Town.

Right on the sea-front, where once the American Consulate stood, Tembo House is something of a landmark in the historic Stone Town streets. Its great location, close to both the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, is slightly removed from the spindly, maze-like streets of the town, and it's easy to find after a long day of wandering. Inside, there are new and old sections to the hotel, but a common theme in both is colourful glass windows and an interesting array of antique furniture from all over the world. If you're looking for central options without an astronomical price tag, this is the place to be.

Begin your morning with coffee on a kopje as the sun rises over the plains and the scene before you comes to life. After a day of spotting lions lazing in the shade and grazing zebra, return to camp for a hearty meal by the fire.

Maramboi Tented Lodge

Tarangire

Popular |
44 Rooms
|
From $320 per person/night
Temporarily closed until the end of 2026
Tanganyika Wilderness Camps has announced the temporary closure of Maramboi Tented Lodge until 1 January 2026. Due to the rising water levels in the surrounding areas, Lake Manyara has significantly overflowed, rendering parts of the lodge - including some guest rooms, inaccessible. Since May, they have undertaken several infrastructure improvements, including the construction of walkways, to preserve the quality of the guest experience. All existing bookings will be automatically released from their system, and any deposits paid will be refunded in full. Maramboi is a large, upmarket tented camp set amongst an oasis of palm trees, in a peaceful, private concession south-east of Lake Manyara. Just around the corner from Tarangire National Park, it’s close to all the big game action, with rolling views of open plains that showcase the surrounding wildlife. As an established camp, it operates like a well-oiled machine, ensuring all your needs are met and often exceeded. Despite its heart-of-the-bush location, guests can expect many of the creature comforts associated with slick city hotels, but at a fraction of the price tag.

Mwagusi Safari Camp

Ruaha

Popular |
13 Rooms
|
From $670 per person/night
Established in the 80s, this is a Ruaha institution
A certain gravitas comes with thirty years’ experience, and this lodge has it. Founded in 1987, Mwagusi is lovingly owned and managed by Chris Fox, a Tanzanian-born conservationist, whose family had a hand in getting Ruaha proclaimed a national park way back when. The camp is remote and the wildlife viewing is exceptional. If you’re into ethical travel, then stay here. A guide-training programme and English classes are a permanent fixture for staff and you can participate in their “Pack for a Purpose” campaign. The lodge has a unique look, but one thing for certain, it’s incredibly appealing.

Ahadi Lodge

Arusha

12 Rooms
|
From $110 per person/night
The perfect lodge to begin or end your Tanzanian odyssey
Ahadi is the Swahili word for 'promise', and Ahadi Lodge's young owners certainly work hard to make sure that you're comfortable and well fed. This little retreat lies just three kilometres from Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania's northern national parks – Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongro Crater and the famous Serengeti – and the owners will happily advise on and organise day trips and safaris to the reserves that are at their best during the time you're visiting. Ahadi is a simple but comfortable place and has become popular enough to have won a TripAdvisor's Cerificate of Excellence in 2014.
